Water pouring into a challis and changing into wine is a token of Christ’s gift to humanity.
This is the first miracle performed by Jesus, bringing evidence of His ministry. It happened at a wedding in Cana of Galilee when the host ran out of wine. Word got to Mary, Jesus’ mother, that the wine had run out. Mary told the servants to do whatever Jesus told them to do. Jesus protested his mother’s insistence, but she knew that her son was to do great miracles. Jesus told the servants to take the water pots, all 6 pots, to fill them with water, (each held 123 liters each equaling 738 liters combined, a lot of water, wine in this case, party plus). The servants agreed to this, wondering how this could be, but served the water. As the bride’s’ father tasted the water that was made into wine, he said that usually the good wine is served first and then when that is gone, as he had heard of the problem. Said to everyone that this wine was the best he had ever tasted. You can only imagine the surprise and delight of the servants and the groom, as they knew what had happened.
We serve a God of wonderful acts; changing and creating, things that never were to bring glory to Himself and to bless onlookers and , seekers, and many asking for a miracle. Here we see water coming out of old stone water pots, filling a cup, and being turned into wine, the best ever.
We are called to drink of the cup of the Lord and receive life. It is His gift to man that we can have communion with the Lord and receive His fullness. We need to lift up our cup, ourselves, unto the Lord, to be filled and drink of Him. We are made beautiful, through and through from the blood of Christ. The light of His glory can shine only through us by the blood of the lamb.
Communion represents the blood of Christ which gives us life as Christ’s life is in the blood. Christ took the cup filled with wine as a token of his blood for us to drink in remembrance of His death and that we should have abundant life!
